They often say the third day after giving birth is a hard one and so it seem it is with limb reconstruction. Today has been a tough one for Caleb with the reality of the circumstance hitting him hard physically and emotionally. He has been the braveheart of the ward and even got given an award from Captain Sunshine from his nurse who claims he is the bravest kid she has seen. And yet as his parents we are faced with the dilema of a child who protects us, others and possibly himself from the intensity of his pain and although it does make it somewhat easier, our priority is allowing him to face and deal with his pain and cirmcumstances wholly and just as he is.
He has retreated today and the Caleb we know has shrunk back and he is finding it hard to smile or interact. I underrstand his desire to close his eyes and wish this away!!
The nursing staff are very sensitive and the doctor understand the process. They have told us that yesterday was for getting him used to the pain and feeling and today is a day just to see it. He recoils at the idea and at one glance he pushes his upper body away from his leg as it to try adn detatch. I cant say it is pretty. It is the gross reality of what has been done, what its to come and what he is experiencing.
We have surrounded him with colour and all of the comfort of his own room at home and yet they only feel like attempts to distract him. And yet he asks for songs like Happy now, The name of Jesus and You reign to sing out throughout our room. It is the harsh reality that he must as we do cling onto his words and presence in the midst of our reality.
