Well it all happened really quickly! I came home from some much treasured time with some girlfriends on Saturday afternoon, only to discover Caleb on the floor in pain and one of his soft dressings covered in pus. Immediately we knew that the dreaded infection had arrived. After a call to the hospital, Dug and I made the decision to allow Caleb to still attend the Lions AFL game. The hospital was in support as well, recognizing the need for Caleb to have some positive experiences. So at 11pm Saturday I made my way into the Mater A & E dept to meet up with Dug and Caleb to have him attended to. The initial wait and assessment was quite frustrating but once we were recognized as having a significant situation, the ED supervisor was attended to the case and we were moved into private treating room. Caleb show significant resistance from the get go and we recognized that we were in for some struggle with him…….and we were right! Caleb immediately refused to allow us to even remove his pus stained dressing. After a struggle in which the doctors could automatically see his resistance, both pain relief and a sedative was discussed with us. His pain levels had sky rocketed and he was given a strong dose of pain meds followed by a sedative, which unfortunately both had to be delivered nasally, as he refused to swallow oral meds and they did not yet have an IV line in. This process was simply horrible as the sedative burnt his nose and mouth and they needed to treat the burn with ice. Once he was calmer, the process of inserting a IV line was significantly better and we could give him the necessary IV medications and draw bloods. Finally at 4am we were moved to the short stay unit and Dug managed to go home- Happy Fathers Day Dug!
We were eventually released and we have since spent the time guarding his wounds and monitoring his temp. We were blessed to escape hospital admission today as he did spike a temp during the night. So we are still on watch and have been told to pack a bag tomorrow when we see our surgeon, as if he is not happy with the progress of the infection then we are to be admitted.
Caleb has taken this step quite hard and for the time in hospital and until this afternoon, we lost any resemblance of our boy again. He has resorted to intentionally punching both Dug and I and at times shown a withdrawal from all outside activity……but today, slowly, slowly he came back. Pin site care was traumatic again as the pain that accompanies the infection leaves him immobile and so we were once again left with no choice but to restrain him---oh how I hate it!!
So we have experienced our first infection and it was more intrusive and swift than I could have imagined. It was exhausting and continues to hold us a little insecure as to what will happen.
I honestly got to the point on early Sunday morning as I sat beside Caleb and watched him sleep restlessly, where I asked my God “oh why does it feel as if you have forsaken us?”
Of course He has not forsaken us, but the way it feels- oh it feels as if He has. Once again today I have been reminded that our feelings do not determine how God moves in our lives. Faith as it stands must be just that- FAITH. Faith to know He is present when you feel utterly alone. Faith to know that He has promised to work all things together for good. Faith to know that even Jesus cried out when He felt abandoned. Faith to know that HE is ever present and ever near. Faith to know that although it feels like to burden is heavy, we can continue to move with His wisdom and strength. Faith to believe that it is about the decision to trust even when we are broken. Faith to know He is God and He is good.
