The story so far.....

Caleb is now 7 years old and was born with a condition called Fibular Hemimelia. It is a rare condition affecting 1 in 30 000 births. In basic terms it is a growth deficiency of the leg. He was therefore born with no ligaments in his knee, a leg length discrepancy, a deficient ankle and only 3 toes and metatarsals in his right leg.

Caleb has always been an exceptionally active boy and until 2 years ago there was very little impact of his condition. However in his prep year of school Caleb began to become increasingly impacted by the pain in his leg and subsequently his back.

Throughout the last two years we have been seen by countless surgeons in Australia and consulted with surgeons in the USA and France. All have remarked at the rare presentation that Caleb has and subsequently the process of treating him has been complicated.

Throughout the entire process, Caleb has continued to show the most indignant strength and courage. He has had two surgeries, countless x-rays and tests, sat through hours of exams and appointments and yet has never complained or shown any frustration. He has weathered wearing several restricting and at time painful braces- always testing them to the maximum and even breaking them.

But now we have reached a season where it has become apparent that he can no longer go without intervention and so in two week on July 31st, we will embark on a season of growth - emotionally, spiritually and physically.....

The procedure will involve 3 components- 1. a ligament construction using his hamstring and ilio tibial muscle to construct stabilizing ligaments for his knee 2. a tibial osteotomy which involved removing part of his tibia to equalize the length and formation of his bone and 3 a tibial lengthening which involves cutting the tibia and inserting an Illaroz frame around his leg which will be extended 1mm a day for 50 days to lengthen his leg by 5+cm. This will be extended and fixed over his knee through his femur to stabilize the knee until it is healed.

And so we have set up this blog in order for us to inform all of you- those who have prayed, love, supported and encouraged from the beginning. So here goes the next season of the journey..........

Num 13:30
Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it."
